Approximately 150 emerging Citrus Growers in Limpopo Province converged at Makhado Show Grounds recently, to attend an Information Day. The Limpopo Citrus Information Day was held in partnership with the Limpopo Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (LDARD) and Citrus Growers Association (CGA), a Grower Development Company supported by First National Bank. The objectives of the event were amongst others sharing useful information on the production and market value chain of the citrus fruits. Citrus fruits such as Oranges, Grapefruits, Lemons, Mandarins and Naartjies are the great source of vitamin C in human lives.

Speaking on behalf of Vhembe District Director, Agribusiness Deputy Director Mr Nkhumeleni Livhebe, highlighted the fact that Agriculture is the most important sector in t South Africa’s economy through its Gross Domestic Product (GDP) contribution through its Farmer Support Policy, LDARD remains committed to join hands with the Citrus Industry stakeholders to take industry forwards.

Representing the farmers, Mr Benett Malungane appealed to the LDARD to work with other sector departments to ensure that farmers get afforded the Land Ownership for farming land as well as Water Rights. “We have the responsibility as farmers and Citrus producers to adhere to phytosanitary regulations, help create jobs and fight crime” said Malungane. He concluded his address by appealing to farmers to exercise food safety.

“Citrus Grower Association has been providing emerging Citrus growers with technical and scientific information for effective production”. Dr Khathutshelo Tshikolomo the Director for Crop Production LDARD Head Office said this addressing the Limpopo Emerging Citrus Growers during Citrus Information Day.  He indicated that the Department notes with awe the contribution by CGA in relation to continued learning, bursaries, scholarships as well as leadership opportunities.

Mr Luther Mkhontho, Deputy Director for LDARD Crop Production urged farmers to take advantage of funding opportunities within the Department. He advised farmers to keep record of their farming activities as this will put them in an advantageous position as and when they apply for funding. His presentation covered extensively the  Farmer Support Policy.
