Veterinary Doctor Sarah Abel performs sterilisation on a dog.

The Limpopo Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (LDARD) Veterinary Directorate hosted an outreach program at Buysdorp, Makhado Local Municipality.

The outreach program provided accessible and affordable primary animal health services to the community. The services offered included sterilisation of pets, dipping of cattle, early detection of diseases, dipping, Rabies vaccination, deworming of domestic animals and the administration of basic treatments and advice.

The free services will go a long way in improving the animal health and welfare. However, a significant benefit to farmers including higher survival rate and more effective, less aggressive treatments to animal which also reduces cost and spread.

The outreach promotes responsible pet ownership through education and awareness. It further calls for continued collaboration amongst the relevant stakeholders such as South African Veterinary Association Community Veterinary Clinics (SAVA-CVC), Department of Health, and the Department of Environmental Affairs, in the fight against rabies infections specially humans.

The promotion of animal and pets’ health is not only to strengthen bondage between human and animal, but part of government support services.
