Acting Head of Limpopo Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (LDARD) Jethro Nowata led the department during the grand opening of Majeje Citrus Farm project at Masalal Packhouse, Ba-Phalaborwa Local Municipality, Mopani District on 24 October 2024.
The move was part of strengthening public-private partnerships. The Majeje Citrus Farm is among the major players of citrus producers, who represent a beacon of hope for the agricultural sector in Limpopo, symbolizing a broader vision of economic revitalization through strategic investments.
The farm's growth from a fledgling operation to one of the region's most promising projects was a testament to the power of collaboration between government and the private sector where the Motsepe Foundation played a role. With the project's first harvest on the horizon, the potential impact on local and national markets cannot be overstated. By focusing on exports, the farm is set to contribute significantly to the province’s GDP.
HoD Jethro Nowata expressed his satisfaction with the Majeje Citrus Project on its commitment to creating jobs and contributing to economic growth. He reiterated the call for replication of Majeje model, which he said play a critical role in addressing the country's high rate of youth unemployment. He said the relationship with commodity groups is crucial because the department alone can't win the battle of creating job opportunities.
HoD indicated that they had visited and driven around with MEC Nakedi Kekana in the past and they are satisfied with all the development taking place at Majeje Citrus Farm and workforce that comprises of the youth and it is something that if it can be massified and multiplied, the fight against poverty will be won.
The anticipated increase in the workforce from the current 70 workers to 400 upon project completion reflects a commitment to addressing unemployment in the region. This expansion not only provides livelihoods for hundreds of families but also offers training and skill development opportunities for the local population. The farm’s growth trajectory underscores the importance of sustained investment in infrastructure and technology to support large-scale agricultural projects.
As the Majeje Citrus Farm continues to grow, it will undoubtedly serve as a catalyst for further agricultural innovation and economic diversification in Limpopo.
