Provincial DDM Champion MEC Nakedi Kekana reaffirms the department’s commitment to supporting farmers through infrastructure development and technical services.
Provincial Champion and MEC for Agriculture and Rural Development, Nakedi Kekana led by Deputy Minister of Land Reform and Rural Development, Chupu Mathabatha hosted the District Development Model (DDM) Champions Session to assesses progress on the Sekhukhune District One Plan, DDM catalytic projects, and strategies towards strengthening the institutionalisation of the plan.
This session took place at the Sekhukhune District Municipality Council Chambers in Groblersdal. MEC Kekana in her capacity as the Provincial Champion and MEC for Agriculture and Rural Development, emphasised that while research shows Sekhukhune is more food secure than some districts like Mopani and Waterberg, greater efforts are needed to commercialise farmers. She stressed that commercial farming is key to producing enough food, fighting poverty, and creating sustainable jobs in the district.
MEC Kekana also raised concern over the recent tariff hikes linked to exports, warning that such increases could impact agricultural production across various commodities. She encouraged stronger local trade among communities to boost the local economy and reduce reliance on external markets.
She further, reaffirmed the Department’s commitment to supporting farmers through infrastructure development and technical services, ensuring that they have the tools and skills to succeed. She also highlighted the need to protect productive land for agriculture rather than allowing it to be lost to non-agricultural developments.
Kekana called for united action in managing land use responsibly, urging all stakeholders to prioritise agriculture for food security, economic growth, and job creation in Sekhukhune.
