The newly constructed two-way bridge is expected to significantly improve traffic flow, strengthen economic connectivity, and enhance road safety for communities.
Limpopo Premier Dr Phophi Ramathuba has officially received the newly completed Steelpoort River Bridge Social and Labour Plan project from the Minister of Mineral and Petroleum Resources, Mr Gwede Mantashe, during a ceremony held at Ga-Malekane Village in the Fetakgomo-Tubatse Local Municipality, Sekhukhune District.
The newly constructed two-way bridge is expected to significantly improve traffic flow, strengthen economic connectivity, and enhance road safety for communities surrounding the busy mining town of Tubatse.
The modern bridge replaces the old single-lane structure that was built in the late 1920s to connect key areas such as Jane Furse, Groblersdal and Burgersfort. For decades, motorists using the old bridge experienced severe delays as vehicles travelling in opposite directions had to wait for one another to cross before proceeding.
The congestion became a major inconvenience for commuters, scholars, businesses and transport operators, particularly within the mining sector where the movement of mining products was frequently delayed. The narrow bridge also posed safety concerns for pedestrians and road users.
Speaking during the handover ceremony, leaders described the project as a major milestone in improving infrastructure and supporting economic development in the Sekhukhune District.
The new bridge has already transformed mobility in the area by allowing the smooth movement of vehicles in both directions while reducing travel delays and traffic congestion. In addition, the old bridge has now been repurposed exclusively for pedestrian use, significantly improving safety for community members crossing the Steelpoort River.
The project was implemented through a partnership involving Roads Agency Limpopo, Samancor Chrome, Dwarsrivier Chrome Mine, Two Rivers Platinum, Tjate Platinum Mine and Glencore as part of their Social and Labour Plan commitments aimed at improving the lives of communities affected by mining activities.
The bridge stands as a symbol of collaboration between government and the mining sector in driving sustainable development and improving the quality of life for residents.
