Jubilees as the community of Moetagare receive their official handover certificate Acting Deputy Director: Capricorn North-Western, Ms. Mashao Pfuluwani gives a message of support to the farmers.

As part of on-going efforts to empower rural farmers, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development officially handed over a newly constructed communal crush pen to the farmers of Moetagare Village in Ga-Matlala, Polokwane Municipality.

The event was more than just a handover — it was also an information-sharing session covering key topics such as profitable small livestock farming, winter supplementation with minerals, climate change and veld management, and the prevention of livestock theft.

Speaking at the gathering, Mr Winston Letsoalo emphasized that the aim was not only to present the facility, but also to educate farmers on income generation through small stock, climate-smart farming, and strategies to mitigate theft.

Mr. Lehumo Mokgotho delivered a presentation on small stock improvement, stressing that farmers should treat livestock farming as a business. He encouraged proper record-keeping to determine profitability and highlighted the importance of selecting the right breeds to meet market demand. He reminded farmers that most of their expenses go to feed, medicine, and herders — costs that can be reduced through better management. He also cautioned against inbreeding and emphasized quality over quantity in herd management.

On animal health, Mokgotho underlined the importance of nutrition during winter and recommended vaccination and regular deworming. He advised the use of quality vaccines and medicines, noting that diseases such as heartwater and lumpy skin disease can heavily affect production if not controlled.

Addressing climate change, Mr. Thabiso Manaka urged farmers to adopt practices that build resilience, such as using drought-resistant crops, minimal tillage, and water conservation. He also raised concern over veld fires, encouraging the creation of firebreaks, responsible land management, and awareness campaigns to prevent fire hazards.

On stock theft, Mr. Phineas Maremane as the livestock association representative reminded farmers that this remains a pressing issue. He encouraged the use of veterinary services, proper care of the new crush pen, and branding of livestock as measures to protect their livelihoods.

Representing the Deputy Director: Capricorn Northwestern, Ms. Pfuluwani Mashao emphasized that the crush pen marks the beginning of improved livestock management. She urged farmers to maintain the facility responsibly to ensure its long-term use.

On behalf of the Moshate of Matlala, Mr. Jacob Moabelo thanked the Department for its continued support and called for stronger partnerships to benefit future generations.

The session concluded with a message of unity: that farmers, government, and community members must work together to ensure food security, sustainability, and the upliftment of rural economies.
