The Department of Agriculture, Land Reform, and Rural Development (DALRRD), led by Dr Modumo Ramodumo, met with communities, various stakeholders, and mining companies to clear out misunderstanding on issues concerning legal laws and statutory prescripts that guide mining activities in communal space.
The engagement took place at Mokgalakwena Council Chambers on 10 May 2024.
The move to find a solution follows the misunderstanding that nearly caused operational disruption between the community and mining sector.
DALRRD through its Directorate: Property Management, outlined the procedures that guide mining prospects in traditional council areas. Thus, explaining to communities and various stakeholders about their rights as occupants / communities and that of the mines where they intend to explore mining activities.

The Department of Mineral Resources also stepped in while unpacking the ways to obtain mining licence as spelt out in the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act, 2002.
The consultative meeting yielded a positive outcome with shared knowledge of operations. In addition, mining companies have committed to continue to give back to community through employment, job creation and skills development.
