MEC responsible for Limpopo Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (LDARD), Mr. Thabo Mokone warns members of the community to refrain from causing unnecessary wildfires, as they are risk to high value investment.

Limpopo is one of a fire-prone Provinces where thousands of hectares (ha) are gutted by wildfires annually leaving especially livestock farmers vulnerable as a result thereof.

The human-caused wildfires include cigarettes, arson, fireworks and outdoor to open burning among others. Intense heat and dry vegetation can fuel a wildfire, which can normally go out of control.

MEC urges farmers to be fire-wise by maintaining their fire belt, not only to protect their own, but those around them. Moreover, to ensure that equipment such as fire beaters and water are always accessible.

Finally, farmers are encouraged to join association such as Fire Protection Association that will assist whenever fire erupts.
