MEC Nakedi Kekana urges learners to consider agriculture as a career of choice.
MEC Nakedi Kekana called upon young girls and boys to consider agriculture as a career of choice.
In her address to learners at Alfred Nngwedzeni Secondary School, Vhembe District on 26 September 2024, MEC Nakedi Kekana shed light that agriculture is one of the most important sectors in the economy. She said it plays a critical role in providing food, creating jobs, and driving economic growth.
“As the world faces challenges like population growth and climate change, the need for skilled people in agriculture has never been greater.
Studying agriculture is not only about farming but also about understanding how to produce food sustainably, use technology to improve farming methods, and find innovative solutions to feed the world. By choosing a career in agriculture, you become part of the future that will ensure food security and economic stability for generations to come”.
MEC explained that the Limpopo Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (LDARD) is working on a plan to make agriculture event stronger by focusing on:
- Increasing primary production (growing crops and raising animals)
- Improving access to markets, so farmers can sell locally and internationally.
- Reducing risks related to climate change.
- Training and developing skills in the agricultural sector.
- Promoting participation by black farmers, women, youth, and people with disabilities.
- Conducting research to improve crops and animals.
She said to learners that agriculture has many career opportunities they can think of, from farming to science and technology. The youth are encouraged to study maths and science to enter fields like:
- Agricultural research (universities, research councils).
- Farming technologies (working with new tools and systems to improve production).
“So, I urge you to choose agriculture as a career of choice.
“LDARD also has agricultural colleges (Tompi Seleka and Madzivhandila Colleges of Agriculture) where you can study and get funding to support your education.
“Agriculture is not just about farming; it’s about creating solutions for the future. With challenges like climate change, we need skilled people to keep growing enough food.
“The future billionaires could come from agricultural sector if young people choose careers in this exciting field”, said MEC.
In her conclusion, MEC Kekana urged learners to remind their parents or family members who are active in agriculture to apply for assistance through Farmer Support Programme from their local agricultural offices. The programme closes on 16 October 2024 for support services for 2025/2026 financial year.
“So, go tell them about this opportunity and that they must visit our website and social media pages for more information, or visit our district offices based at your district municipality”, concludes the MEC.
