MEC Kekana addresses the farming community.

MEC of Limpopo Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (LDARD) Nakedi Kekana had led the awareness of the importance of soil conservation at Zaaiplaas, Elias Motsoaledi Local Municipality, Sekhukhune District.

Conservation of soil is not only for a natural system and vital contributor to the livelihoods through its contribution to food, water, and biodiversity, but for spatial planning and as part of natural resource management.

Conserving soil from erosion, acidification, contamination, sealing, salinization, organics, carbon loss and nutrient balance is crucial if protecting livelihoods is anything to go by. No soil, no agriculture! Soil is a source of energy and a cornerstone of food production. It gives life and is a farmer’s silent partner.

In her address, MEC Kekana said, “World Soil Day is a stark reminder of the choices we face as a province. In the 7th Administration, we have chosen to prioritise land reform, economic transformation, and the fight against inequality. Soil is at the heart of these battles. Protecting it is not just an agricultural concern but a cornerstone of social justice.

“The soil beneath our feet must remain fertile, productive, and abundant—not only for farmers but for every citizen who depends on the food it produces, and the ecosystem services it supports.

Soil degradation is a silent crisis, and its impact ripples through every sector, from agriculture to health to the economy. We cannot afford to be complacent”.

MEC Kekana together with Grain SA have handed over implements (fertilizer spreader, boom sprayer, ripper and and ripper planters with 4 and 2 rows) procured for four study groups based in Zaaiplaas, Sehlakwane. The implements are best used to have minimal disturbance on soil and make it intact and productive for a longer period. They also ensure better water harvesting to ensure that the soil keeps moisture for longer. This is part of government programme to support backyard and small-scale farmers.
