MEC Basikopo Makamu has visited Vencor Abattoir, one of the Limpopo leading red meat producers.

Established in 1977, with slaughter capacity of 50 animals per day, Vencor has grown to a slaughter capacity of 250 animals per day, exporting to 5+ countries and creating 270 jobs. The Abattoir received its Halaal status in 2015 and achieved export status in 2018.

Mandated under Section 12 of the Meat Safety Act (Act 40 of 2000), Provincial Abattoir Rating Scheme Awards (PARS) is a key programme of the Department to recognise abattoirs that consistently maintain high hygiene standards and produce safe meat for human consumption.

Over the past decade, through PARS, the Department has improved hygiene management systems, promoted compliance, protected consumers against meat-borne diseases and supported the economic growth of the province's livestock industry.

MEC Makamu will honour outstanding performers across high-throughput, low-throughput and rural abattoir categories, culminating in the prestigious MEC's Award for the top-performing facility.

The visit forms part of build-up activities ahead of the Provincial Abattoir Rating Scheme Awards on the 22 October 2026, which will recognise excellence in the sector.

Over the past decade, through PARS, the Department has improved hygiene management systems, promoted compliance, protected consumers against meat-borne diseases and supported the economic growth of the province's livestock industry.
