Limpopo’s agricultural landscape gained a new generation of formally recognised farmers on 4 September 2026, as 145 farmers received Further Education and Training (FET) certificates in Plant and Animal Production through the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) programme.

The ceremony, held at Tompi Seleka College of Agriculture in Sekhukhune District, was led by MEC for Agriculture and Rural Development Basikopo Rodgers Makamu, in collaboration with AgriSETA.

The RPL programme recognises that valuable agricultural knowledge is gained not only in classrooms, but also through years of practical experience. Farmers were assessed and awarded qualifications ranging from NQF Levels 1 to 4, converting their skills into nationally recognised credentials.

HOD Mpho Mashamba said the programme demonstrates that learning extends beyond the classroom, while emphasising that agriculture must be viewed as a business capable of creating jobs and generating income.

Representing the Advisory Board of Colleges, Johannes Ramaru welcomed the initiative, describing it as long overdue for experienced farmers without formal qualifications.

Young female farmer Tumisho Mphahlele of Zodwa Farming urged graduates to use their certificates to unlock opportunities, collaborate and produce at a scale that meets market demand.

Addressing graduates, MEC Basikop Makamu said these certificates are more than academic achievements; they affirm their skills and open doors to opportunity.

"We must now ensure graduates receive continued support through mentorship, resources and enterprise development. Use your knowledge and qualifications to build enterprises, create jobs and strengthen food security. Congratulations to all graduates..."
