MEC Kekana (blue outfit) congratulates Lindiwe Motlakala (right) for her production expansion with the inclusion of layers.
MEC responsible for Agriculture and Rural Development Nakedi Kekana joined hands during the harvesting day of yellow maize on 23 hectares at Diwe Farm, Haakdoring 373 KQ, in Thabazimbi, Waterberg District on 6 May 2025.
The move followed the MEC's commitment she made last year to join this harvest during the official launch of Provincial Plantation Season 2024/2025.
The planting season launch together with this harvest are part of the broader government initiative aimed at boosting agricultural productivity, economic growth, and creating jobs in the province.
Diwe farm, which is led by a female farmer, Lindiwe Motlakala, whose precision farming operation started on a 2.5 ha leased farm in 2019 produces variety of grains and vegetables from maize, soya beans, sugar beans, watermelons, among others.
The Department has injected support to the project through production inputs and assisted with mechanisation (use of precision farming which requires the use of GPS fitted tractors) for optimal health and productivity, while minimising wastage, reducing environmental impact, and improving sustainability. This showcases the department's commitment to provide the after-care services to farmers.
Lindiwe Motlakala has extended appreciation to government support. MEC Kekana also thanked the effort demonstrated by farmer and extension officers as well as the mentor of the farmer, Jan de Buys, for the transfer of knowledge and skills. "Despite the harsh climatic condition, you demonstrated the resilience, commitment, and hard work. At least vulnerable people have put food on their table," said the MEC.
This initiative represents partnership between government and emerging farmers and inspires local farmers to pursue more sustainable and productive agricultural practices. Department through this initiative is helping to foster a more resilient agricultural sector in Waterberg District and beyond.
