As part of Meet and Greet Session that took place at Towoomba Research Station, BelaBela on 02 September 2024, MEC Nakedi Kekana has extended her appreciation to the commitment demonstrated by staff members.
She emphasised their crucial role by ensuring that they nurture and inspire various farmers from backyard and small scale who actively participate in agricultural activities while making an impact in contributing to the economy.
Kekana encouraged staff members to become the eyes and ears of the department by participating in municipal IDP program. However, she advised them to guard matters affecting agriculture and give guidance accordingly to the community. Kekana gave example that community needs advice on unnecessary invasion of land earmarked for agricultural production which the respective community can make use of to address food security.
MEC was exposed to the field of agricultural practice and trials for crops. She was impressed to have found unemployed graduates on the ground tilling the land as part of their practical knowledge.
She was also exposed to the demonstration of the mechanisation, made a walk-about in the kraals for small stock and herd of cattle.
Towoomba Research Station was established in the early 1930s, primarily focuses on crops, rangeland, pastures and some livestock.
The station conducts research in both crop and livestock (including pasture) production, providing valuable insights and technologies to farmers and the agricultural sector.
Since its inception, the Station has played a crucial role in advancing knowledge on crops, livestock production and veld management in the province.
MEC Kekana is pleased with the dedication of the staff and their commitment towards research and development in the agricultural sector.
