MASHISHIMALE – Limpopo MEC for Agriculture and Rural Development, Ms Nakedi Grace Kekana, has urged livestock farmers to prioritise biosecurity and remain vigilant against Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD).
Speaking during the department’s Service Delivery Week in Ba-Phalaborwa Municipality, MEC Kekana addressed farmers at Mashishimale R2 and R3. She emphasised Mopani District’s high-risk status due to its proximity to the Kruger National Park.
"Farmers must report any suspicious symptoms immediately and implement basic bio-security measures to protect their herds and livelihoods," Kekana said.
She further called for stronger collaboration between farmers, extension officers, and the South African Police Service to combat stock theft. "Extension officers are your eyes and ears on the ground. Work closely with them and with local police," she added.
The MEC acknowledged service delivery challenges raised by farmers, including limited access to dipping tanks, unequal distribution of livestock feed, and inadequate local auction facilities. She confirmed these issues have been noted for urgent intervention.
The department also committed to revitalising aging animal handling facilities and addressing concerns around brand marking and alignment with Regional Spatial Development Frameworks.
On broader agricultural growth, MEC Kekana said while challenges around land availability persist, development must continue in a responsible and sustainable manner to ensure food security and rural economic growth.
Animals are grouped and entered the crush pen for vaccination and dipping.
