the Mapungubwe Arts Festival 2024
MEC for Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (LDARD); Nakedi Kekana together with MEC for Limpopo Economic Development, Environment and Tourism (LEDET); Tshitereke Baldwin Matibe, MEC for Health; Dieketseng Mashego, Chairperson of the Limpopo Arts and Culture Council; Lesiba Mothoa and Capricorn District Mayor; Cllr. Mamedupi Teffo have joined MEC Funani Jerry Maseko for Department of Sport, Arts and Culture (DSAC) during the Media Launch and unveiling of 2024 Mapungubwe Arts and Cultural Festival, held at Meropa Casino on 11 November 2024.
Mapungubwe Arts and Cultural Festival aims to promote the province’s rich and diverse cultural heritage and also deepen social cohesion and national identity as people.
MEC Kekana gave a brief overview about the link between arts, crafts, culture, and agriculture during her introduction of MEC for DSAC, Jerry Maseko.
“Arts and culture play a unique role in building bonds among people, fostering shared values, and reinforcing a collective identity. When we consider the rural areas of our province, we see immense potential for using arts as a means of fostering unity, pride, and mutual respect.
“One of the most beautiful aspects of arts and crafts is their rootedness in agriculture. Many crafted products that celebrate our culture—like baskets, pottery, and woven mats—are made from natural resources and agricultural products. For example, woven baskets made from locally grown reeds, and dyes derived from indigenous plants, are integral parts of our artistic identity. These crafts not only showcase local artistry but also provide a sustainable way for rural residents to generate income, promoting economic growth alongside cultural preservation,” said MEC Kekana.
MEC Kekana continued to remind audiences to head back to the ploughing field as the 20204/2025 summer crop plantation season has already started. She said the beautiful rain can never be wasted following the dry time for many parts of the province.
Activities leading to the 23rd edition of Mapungubwe Arts and Cultural Festival will include comedy night, film festival, exhibitions, as well as performance by local contracted artists on the 14 December 2024 at Polokwane Cricket Club.
