The MEC for Agriculture and Rural Development, Me Nakedi Kekana, accompanied by Portfolio Committee Members on Agriculture and Rural Development, Honourable Bella Kupa, Honourable Wesley Maringa, and the Executive Mayor of the Waterberg District Cllr. Jack Maeko officially launched 2024/2025 Provincial Planting Season at Diwe Farm in Thabazimbi, Waterberg District, on Friday, 15 November 2024.
The 2024/2025 Provincial Planting Season Launch marked a significant step by the department towards boosting agricultural productivity, economic growth and creating jobs in the province. The recent rainfall following months of drought brought a sigh of relief to those who work the land and livestock farmers.
Speaking during the launch, MEC Kekana said, “Today, as we stand on the fertile grounds of Diwe Farming, we celebrate the beginning of the planting season – a time when farmers, with resilience and vision, prepare for the year ahead. This story, led by Ms. Lindiwe Motlakala, is an inspiring example of what can be achieved through determination, mentorship, and collaborative support from the LDARD and the community.”
This launch represents a broader government initiative aimed at improving food security in the province. Waterberg District is among the two districts reported to be severely food insecure, The MEC chose to host this significant initiative at Diwe Farm as part of her role to address the food security scourge, and to highlight a partnership that works between the government and emerging farmers and to inspire local farmers to pursue more sustainable and productive agricultural practices. Department through this initiative is helping to foster a more resilient agricultural sector in Waterberg and beyond.
MEC commended the sterling work demonstrated by employees at Diwe’s farm. “Through your efforts, we witness the transformative power of agriculture—not only in providing food but in creating economic opportunities, fostering social cohesion, and inspiring future generations. Together, we are building a legacy of sustainable agriculture, one that uplifts, unites, and strengthens our province and our nation.”
“To our small scale and subsistence farmers - we have here with us inputs and fertilisers for 10 individuals- and a further 50 which is currently being verified and will be delivered to their homes soon. This is part of ensuring that there is a sustainable way of having food security- and once you are comfortable with your work- together with the extension officers, you can apply for our farmer support, and you too could be like Lindiwe and Diwe farm should your proposal be chosen”, said MEC.
One of the key highlights of the event was the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development support being provided to emerging farmers like Lindiwe Motlakala. Lindiwe, a determined and passionate young female entrepreneur, has leased 38 hectares of land at Diwe Farm and is making great strides in her agricultural venture. This partnership between Lindiwe and her mentor Mr Jan Buys is a testament to the government's commitment to empowering women in agriculture and fostering rural development.
The Department of Agriculture and Rural Development continues to play a crucial role in supporting Lindiwe’s farming efforts by providing essential inputs such as seeds, fertilisers, and mechanisation equipment to expand her enterprise. These resources are crucial for ensuring that the farm is equipped to meet the demands of modern agriculture, allowing Lindiwe to maximize the potential of her land and improve yields. In addition to the inputs, the Department also assist with extension and advisory services helping Lindiwe optimize the planting, cultivation, and harvesting processes.
Later in the season, the Department will assist Lindiwe with the harvesting of her agro products, ensuring that she has the necessary resources to bring her crops to market successfully. This comprehensive support structure is designed to guide Lindiwe and other farmers through the entire agricultural cycle, from planting to harvest, and to ensure the long-term success of their ventures.
The official launch of the Planting Season at Diwe Farm not only marked the beginning of a new agricultural cycle but also highlighted the positive impact of collaborative efforts between government and local farmers partnerships in fostering rural development and economic growth.
