Majeje is  a beacon of hope on agricultural production and agro-processing capacity.

The Limpopo Department of Agriculture and Rural Development Head of Department, Mme Mpho Mashamba, led a strategic site visit to one of the province’s flagship catalytic initiatives — the 450-hectare orchard development at Majeje Citrus Farm — on 28 April, in the Ba-Phalaborwa Local Municipality.

The visit not only formed part of ongoing efforts to assess progress and unlock solutions to ensure the project delivers maximum impact, but part of the Premier’s Economic Growth Advisory Council (PEGAC) with the aim to drive Limpopo’s economic growth agenda. Key focus areas included critical infrastructure such as electricity supply, irrigation systems, administrative offices, and storage facilities — all essential to sustaining long-term productivity and subsequently making economic spin-off of the province.

HoD Mashamba commended the strong collaboration among stakeholders and acknowledged the significant investment already made. She highlighted Majeje Citrus as a benchmark project, urging similar initiatives across the province to draw lessons from its steady progress and visible outcomes.

Importantly, the project is already transforming lives. A total of 136 jobs have been created, with young people occupying 72 of those positions and women accounting for 47 — a clear reflection of inclusive growth in action. Mashamba emphasized that the economic benefits are extending to surrounding communities, contributing meaningfully to improved livelihoods and local development.

The Majeje Citrus development is a cornerstone of Limpopo’s broader strategy to expand agricultural production and strengthen agro-processing capacity. It aligns directly with the priorities of the Government of National Unity, particularly in driving job creation and economic participation.

Furthermore, the initiative underscores the department’s commitment to transforming the agricultural sector by increasing the participation of black producers across the value chain.

As the project continues to gain traction, it stands as a powerful example of how targeted investment, collaboration, and oversight can turn agricultural potential into real economic opportunity.
