Participants in auction managed BKB Auctioneers at Dzanani sub-session college during information day.

The Limpopo Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (LDARD) Vhembe West Agro-Ecological Zone in collaboration with Boere Koporasie Beperk (BKB) Livestock Auctioneers held an auction at Mashamba TVET College and Dzanani sub-zone, respectively.

The initiative between LDARD and BKB was to afford local farmers an opportunity to sell and buy or exchange through livestock auction right on their doorstep.

During the sessions, participants had an opportunity to exchange knowledge on production, learnt about essential farming principles, biosecurity measures, animal movement regulations, and the importance of animal branding, all of which significantly influence auction prices.

Livestock farmers in rural areas, particularly in Limpopo, often face severe market instabilities, especially during dry seasons, when prices drop significantly. This initiative aims to facilitate local auctions, which will bring the market closer to the community, as highlighted by team leader Riaan Ferreira. By reducing transportation costs associated with selling livestock, local auctions can provide a more accessible and profitable avenue for farmers.

Farmers were educated on various factors affecting auction prices, including the quality, age, and breed of the animals, as well as broader market conditions.

Ms. Lebogang Farland, an Animal Health Technician in Vhembe West, played a crucial role in informing farmers about regulations regarding animal movement and the critical importance of branding for traceability and disease control. She stressed the necessity of maintaining Makhado as a disease-free zone, particularly concerning foot-and-mouth disease, to safeguard livestock health and bolster local economies. Farmers were encouraged to adopt best practices in livestock management to promote sustainable farming and enhance profitability.
