Ga-Mamabolo, Polokwane: The MEC responsible for the Limpopo Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (LDARD), Nakedi Kekana, has called for stronger partnerships to drive agricultural growth and ensure food security across the province. Speaking during an outreach programme in Moshate wa Mamabolo, the MEC emphasised the importance of collaboration between government, local leadership, and farming communities to unlock the full potential of the agricultural sector.

Kekana highlighted that agriculture remains a critical pillar of economic development and rural empowerment in Limpopo. She urged farmers to work closely with the department to access support programmes, training opportunities, and resources designed to improve productivity and sustainability. “When government and communities work together, we can create meaningful change that improves livelihoods and strengthens our rural economy,” she said.

As part of the programme, the MEC handed over seed packs to members of the farming community in Moshate wa Mamabolo. The seed distribution initiative aims to empower smallholder and emerging farmers by providing them with essential inputs for the planting season. Beneficiaries expressed appreciation for the support, noting that access to quality seeds will help boost crop production and household food security.

The MEC was accompanied by Cllr Nomonde Shivhambu, Acting Executive Mayor, who reaffirmed the municipality’s commitment to supporting agricultural initiatives within the area. Shivhambu encouraged residents to make productive use of the resources provided and to view agriculture as a viable source of income and community development.

The visit forms part of the department’s broader efforts to strengthen grassroots farming initiatives and build resilient rural communities through strategic partnerships and targeted support programmes.

Traditional leadership, represented by Kgoši Richard Mamabolo, welcomed the department’s visit. With a major focus on youth empowerment, leaders highlighted plans to establish a youth desk to groom the next generation of farmers and ensure sustainability.

The MEC urged young people to leverage government programs to address poverty, inequality, and unemployment, passionately urging them to make agriculture a fashionable, lucrative career path. In a significant show of support, Traditional Leadership pledged to make land available to young people interested in agricultural activities. The visit concluded with the handover of production inputs to 20 vulnerable households and a demonstration on seedbed preparation at the Phuthaditjaba Multi-Purpose Centre.
