Cattle farming continues to play a crucial role in sustaining the rural economy. The proper facilities in place are among much needed equipment to assist livestock farmers to maximise their productivity.

One such facility is a crush pen, which the Limpopo Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (LDARD) had officially handed over to livestock farmers and subsequently unveiled it at Ga-Sechaba, Moletši under Capricorn North Western Zone on 16 July 2024.

During the handing over, Titus Makgato, Deputy Director Capricorn North-Western Zone said caring of this facility will go a long way in adding value to livestock farmers. Makgato continued that the crush pen will assist livestock farmers with regard to brandmarking of their livestock, routine testing and vaccination through veterinary, being examined or treated or as a loading platform for cattle.

This animal handling facility will further increase the returns in sales if used according to its intended purpose.

Makgato made a plea to farmers to look after the facility against any form of vandalism.

The event has incorporated the effective way of managing livestock where farmers and officials with subject knowledge have shared the best practices with focus on animal health, animal nutrition, climate smart agriculture and stock theft among other aspects including the demonstration thereof.
