Rapid Deployment and Assessment LDARD has deployed specialized teams—including agricultural advisors, economists, engineers, and land-use officials—to conduct on-site assessments across the district.

Following President Cyril Ramaphosa’s declaration of Limpopo and Mpumalanga as disaster-stricken provinces, the Limpopo Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (LDARD) has intensified its response. The Vhembe District was among the hardest hit, suffering extensive damage to homes, farmland, crops, and infrastructure.

Rapid Deployment and Assessment LDARD has deployed specialized teams—including agricultural advisors, economists, engineers, and land-use officials—to conduct on-site assessments across the district. These evaluations are mandatory for farmers seeking disaster relief, as applications must be supported by official reports compiled by extension officers.

In the Collins Chavane Local Municipality, preliminary data suggests a devastating 80% loss of seasonal produce. While assessments are ongoing, the district has already recorded estimated losses of approximately R17,470,000.

Impact on Farmers

The floods struck at a critical time for many producers. In several areas, infrastructure was completely washed away, and seasonal crops were destroyed.

Lillian Mongwe, a local farmer, reported losing three hectares of mangoes ready for harvest. "The rains dealt us a massive blow," she shared. "Since mangoes are harvested once a year, we have lost our entire annual income, alongside seasonal income from maize and chillies."

Lonezer Farm in Nwamatatani Village, which employs 20 permanent workers, saw 11 of its 15 hectares destroyed. The damage included harvest-stage cash crops like tomatoes, cabbages, and okra, as well as significant portions of the farm's fencing.

Commitment to Relief

LDARD remains committed to supporting the agricultural community during this crisis. The department is working closely with stakeholders to ensure assessments are finalized promptly, paving the way for timely interventions and financial relief for affected farmers.
