Ms. Nhlengane Tsheola gives a message of support to the farmers.

The Capricorn North Western Agro Ecological Zone has capacitated the farmers of Ga-Mabitsela in Moletjie, under the Polokwane Municipality, through a focused information-sharing session centred around Maize Production. The event aimed to strengthen farmers’ knowledge on the correct management of maize, the safe use and storage of agrochemicals, and to sensitise them on the ongoing Farmer Support Programme, which remains open until 31 October 2025.

Ms. Mabina Koena opened the session, explaining that the purpose was to empower farmers with the right approach to maize production in order to achieve improved yields under dryland conditions. She highlighted the importance of reviving indigenous farming knowledge and encouraged farmers to adopt proper planting methods and handle agrochemicals responsibly to safeguard both their crops and the environment.

Mr. Maphoto Johannes emphasised soil testing as a vital step before planting, enabling farmers to understand the soil’s condition and make informed decisions on crop management. He guided farmers on using certified seeds, pest-resistant cultivars, and practising crop rotation to preserve soil nutrients. He also stressed the importance of spacing during planting to reduce seed costs and ensure healthy plant growth.

In his closing remarks, Mr. Maphoto urged farmers to research their crop varieties, monitor soil conditions, and maintain strong working relationships with agricultural advisors. He further encouraged them to take advantage of lower input costs during off-season periods and to always store agrochemicals safely.

Ms. Maswanganyi Sibongile expanded on the correct use and storage of agrochemicals, highlighting the health and environmental risks of improper handling. She referenced relevant Acts governing chemical use and reminded farmers of the new restrictions on high-risk chemicals. She also demonstrated safety gear usage and first-aid measures in case of accidental exposure, stressing the importance of labelling, traceability, and proper disposal of containers after spraying.

Farmers were encouraged to apply for the 2026/27 Farmer Support Programme, with guidance from Mr Kubayi Future on completing application forms correctly to ensure eligibility. He reminded them that the programme supports both subsistence and emerging commercial farmers, including youth and persons with disabilities.

Ms. Tsehola Nhlengane closed the session by thanking the farmers for their participation and urged them to continue attending departmental training sessions. She encouraged unity among farmers in addressing climate challenges and maximising opportunities offered through government support programmes.

Ms. Kwena Mabina outlines the purpose of the gathering.
