Hlahla Manganyi, a young farmers, who defied all odds by creating employment to self and others.

What started as a passion for farming has blossomed into a source of fresh food, employment and hope for communities in Rotterdam Village, Greater Letaba Municipality, Mopani District.

Established in 2015 by Hlahla Manganyi, Hlahla Backyard Farming produces a variety of nutritious vegetables, including tomatoes, spinach, mustard and cabbage. The project grows both winter and summer crops, ensuring a steady supply of fresh produce throughout the year.

Driven by a desire to improve access to healthy food, Manganyi supplies vegetables to local households, pay points and nearby crèches at affordable prices. His commitment extends beyond business, as he regularly supports orphans at local drop-in centres and assists needy community members with vegetable donations.

Hlahla Backyard Farming has also become a platform for knowledge sharing. Manganyi demonstrates backyard farming techniques to women and young people interested in starting their own food gardens, encouraging them to turn available household spaces into productive sources of food and income.

The project is further contributing to local economic development by creating seasonal employment opportunities for a young person and a woman from the village, particularly during weeding and harvesting.

Hlahla’s story demonstrates how backyard farming can strengthen food security, promote healthy lifestyles and create opportunities while building resilient rural communities.
