The Department of Health Auditorium in Polokwane came alive as Capricorn District hosted a vibrant and heartfelt Women’s Month celebration. The event brought together women from across all three Agro-Ecological Zones and the District Office, honouring their unwavering contributions to society, the workplace, and rural communities.
This year’s theme placed a strong emphasis on empowerment, wellness, and awareness, especially around the ongoing fight against Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF). With alarming rates of violence affecting women and girls in South Africa, the programme served as a platform to reflect, raise awareness, and encourage action. Speakers called for solidarity, accountability, and stronger community interventions to create safer environments for women. The atmosphere blended dignity with joy as stakeholders offered a variety of support services. These included health screenings, mental health awareness, and rejuvenation activities aimed at improving overall well-being. Attendees were treated to motivational talks that reignited their purpose and drive, while therapeutic massage sessions provided a moment of rest and relief, reminding every woman present of the importance of self-care in the midst of service to others.
The gathering also paid homage to the women whose footsteps paved the way. Struggle heroines like Albertina Sisulu, a fearless nurse, activist, and mother of the nation, were honoured for their leadership and sacrifice in the fight against apartheid and for gender equality. Another icon remembered was Charlotte Maxeke, the first Black South African woman to graduate with a university degree and a trailblazer in political activism and women’s rights. Their legacies remain powerful reminders of what women can achieve when they are educated, supported, and determined.
Ms Nemavhola Zwianzo, on behalf of the Capricorn District Director, Ms Kekana Ephenia highlighted the importance of such gatherings as women, and the purpose of solidarity between women to foster communities, nurture generations to come and offer emotional support to each other as women. Her words were echoed by Ms Mawasha Mandisa, who clearly reiterated that women need to identify how they can contribute towards “Building a resilient and inclusive economy for all”. Ms Mawasha concluded by sparking the idea in colleagues, to identify channels to make departmental support programmes accessible to all women in order to foster economic participation and growth.
As the celebrations unfolded, one thing was clear: the women of Capricorn District are not only nurturers and caregivers, but also leaders, change-makers, and agents of progress. Their collective energy and courage continue to shape communities and build a better future for all.
In the spirit of Women’s Month, Capricorn District salutes every woman—your courage inspires change, your voice drives progress, and your presence transforms lives.
