Mpho Musetha outlines the funding and Farmer Support Programs tailor-made for farmers at LDARD.

Limpopo Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (LDARD) Vhembe West agro-ecological zone took the Information Day to Buysdorp farming community in Makhado.

Both livestock and crop farmers were held under one roof exploring to mixed farming techniques and disease management strategies. This initiative aimed not only to enhance farming practices, but also to increase overall agricultural productivity within Buysdorp farming community.

The event featured wealth of knowledge from a lineup of presenters representing various fields, from Animal Health, Laboratory Services, Landcare and Land Use Management, Extension and Advisory Services, and Agribusiness.

Ms. Lebogang Farlands detailed rabies as one of the zoonotic diseases. She provided valuable insights and practical tips on preventing rabies in animals and caring for infected humans. On the same side of animal health. Ms. Litshani Jama, the Veterinary technologist stationed at Vhembe West was another valuable speaker, shedding light on the departmental Veterinary laboratory's services and explained how farmers could access these resources. She indicated that the Laboratory assists with diagnostic of different diseases easing the burden on farmers as the Laboratory services are freely accessible to farmers within the district and beyond.

Farmers were informed that LDARD advisors offers free castration demonstrations to help farmers learn proper techniques. It was also recommended that farmers castrate their animals while they are still young particularly if they do not have a crush pen or a holding facility.

Ms. Mpho Musetha also addressed the community, detailing the funding programs available through the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development. She highlighted the application’s requirements for the Farmer Support Program, aiming to empower farmers financially.

Additionally, Ms. Khakhu Maboho sparked discussions with her presentation on the Conservation of Agriculture Resource Act, 43 of 1983 which aims to control the use of natural agricultural resources, promoting conservation of soil, water and vegetation as well as invasive plants.

This Information Day reflects a commitment to empowering farmers by providing them with the crucial information they need to thrive in the agricultural sector. Through such initiatives, the LDARD is dedicated to fostering growth and sustainability in local farming communities.
