Agricultural Advisor Tebogo Thobakgale explains the purpose of the event.

The Limpopo Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (LDARD) in Mopani District had hosted a hands-on Avocado Study Group at Magalies Boerdery in the Greater Letaba Municipality, reinforcing its commitment to farmer development through Extension Services. The initiative supports government’s drive for inclusive growth by equipping producers with practical, market-relevant skills.

Focused on avocado production, the session aimed at improving quality, boosting yields, and strengthening farmers’ competitiveness. Steven Mantsho from the Subtropical Growers Association led a detailed presentation on best practices across the value chain. He underscored the importance of proper soil sampling and management, noting that healthy soil is the foundation of successful avocado farming. He further highlighted the crop’s high-water requirements, especially during dry spells, and the need for balanced fertilisation to sustain flowering and fruit development.

Mantsho cautioned against harvesting during rainy or wet conditions, explaining that moisture at harvest can compromise fruit quality and shorten shelf life. He stressed that farmers must understand optimal harvesting windows based on local environmental conditions to meet market standards. In promoting sustainability, he encouraged the use of natural inputs over synthetic boosters to protect soil health and ensure long-term productivity.

Melrose Ramokonyane from LDARD urged farmers to actively participate in study groups to expand their knowledge base. She announced that the next session will include a visit to a commercial nursery, offering further practical exposure.

Ramokonyane also emphasised discipline and professionalism, particularly during harvesting, and acknowledged the pressures of climate change on production. She encouraged farmers to remain committed, adapt practices, and safeguard both livelihoods and jobs within the sector.

She concluded by urging participants to apply the knowledge gained to deliver consistently high-quality produce.

Steven Mantso from the Subtropical Growers Association takes the farmers through some of important elements to consider when planting avocado.
