In her keynote address, Limpopo Premier Dr. Phophi Ramathuba reaffirmed government’s commitment to social cohesion, redress, promotion of dignity and nation building.

The Limpopo Provincial Government in partnership with Institutions of higher learning, Universities of Venda and Limpopo, have commemorated an Africa Day held at Thohoyandou Town Hall, Thulamela Municipality in Vhembe District on 25 May 2025.

The commemoration aimed to honour the memory of those who suffered the past injustices, while celebrating the continent’s rich cultural diversity, resilience and promotion of peace, unity and inclusive development.

In her keynote address, Limpopo Premier Dr. Phophi Ramathuba said, we do not just commemorate a date; we awaken the spirit of Africa and in doing so, we recommit to building Africa we want through, solidarity, equality and sustainability.

Premier reaffirmed government’s commitment to social cohesion, redress, promotion of dignity and nation building. “No moment is apt to remind us about the need for building a stronger Africa than the recent global changes that have had a negative bearing on the continent, seeking us to be more united and stronger to withstand all the economic pressures that we now face”, noted Premier.

She further explained that “Africa Day reminds us of the visionary spirit of our forebears, who established the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) with a mission: to promote solidarity, encourage trade, support development, resolve conflict and protect the sovereignty of African nations. Today, more than ever, it is our responsibility to bring the vision of the African Union (AU) to life.

The event is themed, “Justice for Africans and People of African Descent through Reparations”.

The event included wide range of activities including carnival, cultural music, arts, recreational walk and promotion of government services in a form of exhibitions.
