MEC Basikopo Makamu has had a distinguished career, serving as an Educator from 1996, Accountant and Revenue Manager at Greater Giyani Local Municipality in the Mopani District, ANC Mopani Regional Secretary in a full-time position, ANC Deputy Provincial Secretary, Member of the Limpopo Provincial Legislature, and Member of the Executive Council (MEC).
He served as MEC for the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development from 2018 to 2019, and for the Department of Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs (COGHSTA) from 2019 until 02 September 2026.
He is currently serving as the Member of the Executive Council for the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development.
MEC Basikopo Makamu has a rich political history, having served in various leadership positions within political and labour organisations.
He is currently a member of the ANC Provincial Executive Committee in Limpopo Province and a Member of the Limpopo Provincial Legislature.
MEC Basikopo Makamu has extensive government experience, having served as an Educator specialising in Accounting, Business Economics and Economics at Edward Humo High School from 1996 to 2006.
He was also the Accountant and Revenue Manager at Greater Giyani Local Municipality in the Mopani District from 2011 to 2014.
Additionally, he served as the Member of the Executive Council (MEC) in the Limpopo Department of Agriculture and Rural Development from 2018 to 2019, before serving as MEC in the Limpopo Department of Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs.
He held the latter position throughout the sixth administration under the leadership of Premier Stanley Mathabatha, until the reconstitution of the seventh administration's Executive Council by the current Premier of the Limpopo Provincial Government, Dr. Phophi Ramathuba.
Mr. Basikopo Makamu was redeployed with effect from 02 September 2026 to serve as the Member of the Executive Council for the Limpopo Department of Agriculture and Rural Development.
MEC Basikopo Makamu has achieved notable success, including building the ANC Mopani Region into a coherent and vibrant part of the organisation in Limpopo Province.
As Head of Elections in Limpopo and Deputy Provincial Secretary (DPS), Makamu played a crucial role in the ANC's electoral successes in the province, demonstrating leadership and organisational skills.
His skills and efforts contributed to the ANC's 2024 electoral results in Limpopo, which delivered a 73% majority for the party in the province, according to the information provided.
